Thomas "Tom" Harold Stien, 78, of Massillon died suddenly in his home of a heart attack on Sunday, March 1, 2015. His wife and daughter, Rachel were both by his side. Tom was born on August 8, 1936 in Dover. He was the son of the late Harold "Bo" and Mildred "Tommy" (Lieser) Stien.
Tom served in the Air Force for four years after graduating from Dover High School. He worked at Greer Steel briefly before going to Superior Meats in Massillon. After they closed, he worked at Hills Farm Supply in Canal Fulton before going to Karl Kummerlings, Inc. in Massillon. It was there he suffered a broken back in a fall and he retired on June 14, 1993. Tom was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover. In addition to helping Daniel work on his stock car, he enjoyed woodworking. There wasn't anything he couldn't fix around the house.
He is survived by the love of his life, the former Barbara Schaar, whom he married on July 3, 1959. He is also survived by his daughters; Rebecca (Brian) Myers of Alliance, Rachel Stien of Massillon; son, Daniel Stien of Massillon; grandchildren, Logan (Elizabeth) Myers of Alliance, Kyle Myers of Alliance; great-grandchildren, Olivia, David and Cecelia Myers of Alliance; sisters, Marilyn Festi of Strasburg, Margaret "Peggy" Lawless of Dover, Beverly (Theron) Hershberger of Dalton; brother in-law, Joe Keener of Dover.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters; Nancy Keener, and Linda Sewart; and his mother and father in-law; Theodore and Edna Schaar.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at 11:00 am with Rev. Thomas Dunkle officiating. Interment will take place at Dover Burial Park. Following the service of committal, a meal will be served at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 from 4-7pm and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
