Vaughn J. McCracken, 90, of Dover died early Thursday morning, March 31, 2016 in the Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a lengthy illness.
Vaughn retired in 1985 from the Shipping Department at the Eaton Corporation in Massillon following 44 years of service.
Born November 2, 1925 in Massillon, he was the son of the late Paul C. and Mary (Kitchens) McCracken. He was also preceded in death by his wife Eva Louise (Keppler) McCracken of 44 years. She died on March 31, 1988 along with his two brothers, Eddie and James McCracken.
He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover. He was also active in numerous organizations including a Life Member of the former Dover Elks, Dover VFW, D.A.V. in Massillon, Dover Eagles and Moose lodges, Dover Army Navy Club, 40 et 8, Charles Hofer Post of the American Legion where he served as Commander, and the Massillon Knights of Columbus. Vaughn proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed delivering trailers for Mr. Trailer for many years and sitting on his front porch and watching the traffic.
He will be sadly missed by his family including his daughter, and caregiver for the past 3 and a half years, Sandy Miles of Dover; son, Mick (Cay) McCracken of Ellenton, Florida; four grandchildren, John David (Dana) Miles, Katrina (Nelson) Morales, Shelly Davis and Breck McCracken; 5 great grandchildren Zach Miles, Ty Miles, Samantha Morales, Sabrina Morales and Conner Davis and a great great grandson, Caden; an adopted daughter, Ruth Knecht of Dover and a sister, Helen Fishel of Dover. He will also be missed by his furry buddies, Gizzy and Rocky.
A service celebrating Vaughn's life will be held Tuesday, April 5, 2016 beginning at 10:30am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Fr. Jimmy Hatfield officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his wife Eva and mother and father in law Thurman and Ethel Keppler in Calvary Cemetery at Dover. The Dover VFW will conduct military honors. A reception will follow at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday from 4-7pm. Christian Wake services will be held at 6:45pm.
