Velma J. Cochran, 82, a longtime resident of Dover, Ohio died Thursday, June 24, 2010 in her home following a brief illness lovingly surrounded by her family.
Velma was born December 15, 1927 in Brightwood, the daughter of the late Dennis and Helen (Miller) Kohler.
She retired from Alsco Anaconda in Sugarcreek following thirty years of service. Following retirement, she worked at Dover-Phila Electric for ten years.
An active member of the Dover Foursquare Gospel Church, Velma served the church as a deaconess, was a nursery worker and sang in the choir. She devoted her life to the Lord and her family. In her children's eyes, Velma was almost perfect. She had many interests including writing where she was a published author, traveling on bus trips, attending summer concerts at Tuscora Park, crocheting, playing the organ and especially loved celebrating birthdays with her sisters. She will be remembered as kind and giving and was always able to talk and laugh with anyone.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Walter R. Cochran who died January 7, 1985. She was also preceded by a sister, Bonnie and a brother in law, Larry "Cork" Reichman.
Velma is survived by six children Linda (husband, John) Marks of Wilkshire Hills, Barbara Norman, Peggy (husband, Eric) Vitt both of Dover, Mickey (wife, Jolene) Cochran of Port Washington, Helen (husband, Dave) Dawson of Beach City, and Jill Ross of Dover; three brothers, Norman Kohler of Gahanna, Jerry (wife, Janet) Kohler of Massillon, and Danny (Shari) Kohler of New Philadelphia; five sisters, Nancy June Leggett, Patsy (husband, Don) Swank, Sally Reichman, Kay (husband, Albert) DeMattio all of New Philadelphia, and Doris "Jackie" (husband, Kenny) Heid of Stonecreek. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services celebrating Velma's life will be held Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 11am in the Foursquare Gospel Church in Dover with Pastor Ron May officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband, Walter at East Avenue Cemetery in New Philadelphia. Friends will be received Friday from 4-7pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover and Saturday at the church from 10-11am.
