Velva M. Crago, 83, of the Hennis Care Centre and formerly of Washington St., Dover died Sunday morning, April 15, 2012 in Union Hospital following a period of declining health.
Born May 2, 1928 in Charleston, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Bryan and Bertha Inez (Carter) Witt. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Calvin D. Crago who died Nov. 19, 1983. In addition, she was preceded by two brothers, Virgil and Jerry Menninger; a stepbrother, Eugene Whitlock and a stepsister, Delores Cummings.
Velva retired from the former Brooklyn Grill in Dover and was previously employed at the former Leonard's Restaurant and the Cornett's Diner both in Dover.
She was a member of the New Philadelphia VFW and the former Dover VFW. She was also a former member of the Dover Eagles Auxiliary and the Salvation Army. She attended the Apostolic Pentecostal Christian Lighthouse in New Philadelphia. She will be remembered for her love of animals and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She will be sadly missed by her family including her daughter Brenda (Tim) Ghee of Dover; three grandchildren Kevin (Tonya) Bell and Kimberly (Gary) McRobie both of Dover and Kristin Bayer of New Philadelphia; eleven great grandchildren, Dalton, Mason, Shaina and Danica Bell, Taylor and Kortney McRobie , Jordan, Jarrett, and Jeremiah Swinderman and Brentin and Makinsey Bayer; three brothers, Clifford (Betty) Witt of Charleston, W.Va., James (Virginia) Witt of Senatobia, Miss., and Larry Joe (Bonnie) Menninger of Charleston, W.Va., a sister, Deloris "Bitty" Thomas of Charleston, W.Va., a stepbrother, Carl Whitlock of St. Albans, W. Va., and a stepsister, Barbara West of Pascagoula, Miss. along with several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service celebrating Velva's life will be held Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 11am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Pastor Ed Scaglione officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband, Calvin in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5-8pm in the funeral home.
