Vera Cosgrove

Vera Cosgrove, 87, of Dover, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 in Union Hospital.

Born October 23, 1923 at Odessa, Russia, she was the daughter of the late Zachaus & Wilhelmine Immel Gustin. Though born in Russia, her family roots were in Germany. Vera could speak both languages fluently. She was also an excellent cook, specializing in German meals, breads and soups.

On December 23, 1948, she married the love of her life James E. "Jim" Cosgrove. The two met while he was stationed overseas. The two were married 41 years before Jim preceded Vera in death on October 28, 1990.

For many years, Vera tended bar and waited table for the former Espenschied's and Bassetti's restaurants.

She was a member of Dover's St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed traveling especially the summer fishing trips to Canada, visiting Germany, and also enjoyed dog and horse racing events.

Surviving family members include: two children, James (Vicki) Cosgrove of Cape Coral, FL and Christine (Earl "Butch") Reed of New Philadelphia; six grandchildren, Eric (Linda) Reed of Dover, Tonya (Mike) Losoya of Round Rock, TX, Amy Freeman of New Philadelphia, Renee Reed of New Philadelphia, James (Annette) Cosgrove of Cincinnati and Jennifer (Chandler) Park of Indianapolis; 12 great grandchildren, Jeff Reed, Samantha, Zachary and Cody Losoya, Aryal, Jules and Mycah Freeman, Raine and Raymond Reed, Dillon and Julia Cosgrove, and C.J. Park; a brother, Thomas Gustin formerly of New Philadelphia; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral mass will be held Saturday, January 8, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church. Fr. Jimmy Hatfield will serve as celebrant. Interment in Dover Burial Park follows the mass. Friends may call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover on Friday from 5-7pm.
