Verneda Louise Stingel "Oma," 90, of Hampstead, Maryland, and formerly of Strasburg, passed away Sunday, June 11, 2017, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Mount Airy, Maryland.
Born April 17, 1927, in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Arnold Philip and Nora Louise Swonger Yenni. Verneda was the wife of the late Donald Dale Stingel, who died in 2001.
She was a 1945 graduate of Dover High School, and worked for U.S. Quarry Tile in East Sparta from 1945 until 1961, when she became a homemaker after the birth of her daughter. Verneda was a member of the Democratic Women's Club and the Charles E. Hofer American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop Leader, Sunday school teacher and Youth Leader, and did volunteer work at hospitals, nursing homes, and for homebound patients. Verneda was raised and confirmed in St. John United Church of Christ in Strasburg, and became a member of Winfield United Methodist Church when she married, and then a member of Church of New Hope in Dover. When she moved to Maryland, Verneda attended Wesley United Methodist Church in Hampstead with her family. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and was a collector of birdhouses. Verneda was an enthusiastic fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and San Antonio Spurs’ Tony Parker. She enjoyed watching her granddaughters play all sports until her health made it too difficult to do so.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Jana Louise Stingel Zachman and Jeffrey W. Zachman of Hampstead; three granddaughters, Mary-Victoria "Tori" Louise Zachman, Lindsay Dale Zachman and Olivia Irene Zachman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, and her husband, Donald, two brothers, Donald A. and William Floyd “Duke” Yenni, predeceased her.
The family received friends Thursday, June 15, 2017, in the Eline Funeral Home, Hampstead. Additional visitation will be Sunday, June 18, 2 – 5 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover.
