Virginia L. "Ginny" Smith, age 74, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, June 17, 2012, in Aultman Hospital, Canton, from complications after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Born November 9, 1937, at New Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Margaret Marburger Gribble. Ginny graduated from New Philadelphia High School, and, on June 27, 1964, married Ronald L. "Ron" Smith, at Mason, Ohio. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. A true caregiver, Ginny was also a licensed practical nurse, who was employed by Massillon State Hospital as well as local nursing homes, ultimately retiring from South Broadway Nursing Home at New Philadelphia.
Ginny enjoyed traveling to Canada to camp and fish with her family, and playing jass with Ron at the Tusky V.F.W. She also liked sports, especially following the Indians, Browns and Cavaliers. In her younger days, she was a bowler, participating in local leagues.
Survivors include her husband, Ron; her three daughters, Diana (Greg) Swinderman and Sandy (Dave) Smith, both of New Philadelphia, and Beth (Randy) Crouse of Strasburg; her son, Bill Davidson, also of New Philadelphia; her seven grandchildren, Randy, Tara, Nathan, Ashley, Toni, Justin and Mandy; her fourteen great-grandchildren; her six sisters, Doris (Richard) Mussman, Mary Wiles, Becky (James) Golden, Helen (Robert) Ortwin, Sandy Tyson and Sally (Rick) Nagel; her three brothers, Mack, Larry (Barbara) and Terry (Carol) Gribble; several nieces and nephews; her sister-in-law, Barbara Norman; her brother-in-law, John Smith; and her dear friend, Dawn (John) Miller.
In addition to her parents, Ginny was preceded in death by her grandson, David Smith; her sister, Maxine Whitman; her brother, Bud Gribble; her sisters-in-law, Patsy Gribble, Christina Smith and Bernice Welsch; and by her brothers-in-law, Bill Wiles, Jim and Tom Smith.
A funeral service will be held Friday, June 22, at 1:30 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover, with Rev. Brian Flood officiating. Immediately following the service, there will be a luncheon in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center.
