Walter A. Stockert, 94, of Strasburg passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Hennis Care Center of Dover.
Born on May 20, 1928, in Canton, he was the son of the late Christian H. and Cena (Konen) Stockert. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers; Paul, Harold, George, and Rev. Donfred and Tom Stockert and his sisters, Garnette Wehinger, and Jane Krempel.
Walter graduated from Washington High School in Massillon. He was the former owner and operator of Stockert Drilling Company at Strasburg. He retired in 1984 but continued to work for his son, Reggie Stockert of R. G. Stockert Drilling Company.
He was a member of the former St. Aloysius Catholic Church at Strasburg and St. Joseph Catholic Church of Dover. He was also a member of the Strasburg Lions Club for 62 years and served the club and District 13 in many positions including every club position, board of directors, and he received outstanding recognition from the District, State, and International Status. He also served as president on three different occasions. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Honor Award. He assisted in many projects throughout the community. He was also active with the Strasburg Franklin Booster Club and a member of the Hall of Fame VMCCA Car Club.
On November 22, 1974, he married Barbara Mize Judson. In addition to Barbara, he will be missed by his three sons; Gregory Stockert, Jeffrey (Sheila) Stockert, and Reginald “Reggie” (Deborah) Stockert; his grandchildren, Laura Ashley, Gregory Louis, Sara, Kacie, Gabrielle, John, Kellie, and Regis; eleven great-grandchildren; his step-children, Alicia Ward, and William Judson; and his sister, Marguerite Eckstein; along with several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at 11:30 am with Father Jimmy Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Union Cemetery. Friends can call on Tuesday at the church from 9:30-11:30 am. A meal will be served at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Strasburg following the service of committal.
