Walter Eugene Van Alstyne

November 23, 1925 — January 13, 2005

Walter Eugene Van Alstyne, 79, a lifelong resident of Dover, died Thursday in Union Hospital.

For 38 years he worked as a Lift Operator for the former Sparta Ceramics at East Sparta.

Born November 23, 1925, he was the son of the late Mearle A. and Celia Eckleberry Van Alstyne.

Walter proudly served his country in the Army during two tours of duty in World War II from 1943-1946. He was a member of the Division 9959th Technical Services Unit, the 110th General Hospital, and Wakeman General Hospital in England.

As a life member of the Dover VFW, Walter was an original member of the Color Guard and served on funeral detail. He was also a Charter Member and Life member of the Dover Army-Navy. Additionally, he was Past Commander of the Dover American Legion, Past Commander of the Tuscarawas County Counsel of the American Legion, and Past Chef de Gar of the Forty et Eight.

He is survived by his loving wife, the former Joanne Moser, whom he wed on January 5, 1951.

Walter will also be missed by: four daughters, Cynthia Powell of Virginia Beach, VA, Diane L. Dorsey of New Philadelphia, Mrs. Michael (V. Jane) Brown of Dover, and Jody Matics of Navarre; ten grandchildren, James (Kayce), Paul and Matthew Powell all of Virgina, Chad (Laurel) and Katie Dorsey of New Philadelphia, Michael L., Lindsay and Abby Brown of Dover, and Jessy and Jenn Matics of Navarre; two great grandchildren Treavor and Branden Powell; siblings, Mrs. Bettie Heintz, Mrs. June Fanti, Mr. Bill (Grace) Shroyer and Mr. Larry (Carolyn) Van Alstyne. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elnor VanAlstyne and Jean Tyson.

Friends may call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover on Sunday, January 16 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. In keeping with Walter�(TM)s wishes, his body will be cremated following the visitation.

The Dover VFW will be conducting honors at the graveside in a public ceremony Tuesday, January 18, at 2:30 p.m. in the Dover Burial Park. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center.
