Walter J. Berry

Walter J. “Bud” Berry, 83, of Dover, Ohio died Wednesday, January 31, 2007 in the Carroll County Health Care Center following an extended illness. Through his faith and perseverance, he was able to successfully wage a 31 year battle with heart disease which enabled him to enrich the lives of his family and friends..

Bud was a longtime resident of the New Cumberland area prior to moving to Dover. He attended school in Sherrodsville.

Born September 8, 1923 in Canton, he was the son of the late Walter S. and Inez M. Lucas Berry.

Bud retired in 1983, as a supervisor for Warner & Swasey in New Philadelphia where he worked for 28 years.

He was a member of the New Cumberland United Methodist Church and was a mason having been a member of the former Leesville Masonic Lodge and member of the Tuscarawas Lodge #59 F&AM. He served as a Radar Operator with the 226th Antiaircraft Searchlight Battalion during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He enjoyed all sports especially bowling, golf and softball and was an avid fisherman. He also loved woodworking and reading. He will always be remembered for his strong faith and love of family.

Bud is survived by his wife, Nancy Strother Berry with whom he would have celebrated 59 years of marriage on May 8; He is also survived by a son Raymond (Nancy M.) Berry of Mineral City; two daughters, Denise (Larry) Graham of Dover and Lesa (William) Haswell of Cortland, Ohio; five grandchildren, Scott Fisher of New Philadelphia, Dan and Dave Haswell both of Cortland and Robert and Kevin Duffy both of Woodsfield;
Six great grandchildren, Zoe Fisher, Joshua, Bryan, Trey, Brandon and Hannah Duffy; one brother Jack (Ruth Ann) Berry of Mineral City along with many loving and caring nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Maline and Danny Berry and three sisters, Doris Boyd, Grace West, and Helen Sturrett.

Funeral services celebrating Bud�(TM)s life will be held Saturday, February 3, 2007 at 2pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia with Pastor Ted Knapp and Pastor Doug Mallernee officiating. Interment will be in the New Cumberland Cemetery where the New Philadelphia VFW will conduct military graveside services. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday (Today) from 6-8pm.and Saturday from 1-2pm.
