Walter W. Black

Walter W. Black, 93, of Canton, and formerly of Dover, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, in Aultman Hospital at Canton following an extended illness.

Born Aug. 7, 1909, in Dundee, he was a son of the late Verner and Lydia Haas Black. Walter attended Bolivar schools and married Dorothy LaTourrette in 1933. Dorothy preceded him in death in 1978. Walter retired as a stationary engineer for LTV Steel in 1974.

He was a member of St John United Church of Christ at Dover. Walter was a gardener, growing vegetables and fruit trees. He enjoyed playing cards with his wife and caring for animals, of which he had many. Above all, he loved his family. They made many wonderful trips to Ocean City and Atlantic City every year.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet A. Black, with whom he made his home; a granddaughter, Danalee Black Griffiths of Rome, Ga.; a grandson, James Eric Black of Guangzhou, China; four great-grandsons, Daniel and David of Rome, Ga., and William and Joseph of San Antonio, Texas; a niece and five nephews; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Black of Dover.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Dorothy, he was preceded in death by a son, James W. Black, in 1970, and by a daughter-in-law, Virginia Sani Black.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home at Dover. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. There will be a reception in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center following the committal. Visitation will be Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
