Ward T. “Ted” Holdsworth, 89, of New Philadelphia, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in Union Hospital, Dover, following a brief illness.
Born Jul. 19, 1914 in Conesville, he was a son of the late Clyde and Anna Laura Phillips Holdsworth. Ted graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1933, and, in 1935, he wed the former Geraldine Ruth Chaney in Wheeling, WV. Ted went to work as a salesman for the Continental Bread Co. in the early 1940(TM)s, a career that lasted over thirty years. He, Geraldine and their young family moved to New Philadelphia in 1945, interestingly enough, into a home that was the former office of a metal scrapyard. Ted cleaned up the place, planted fruit trees, and grew beautiful roses there. Some of those roses graced the wedding bouquets of his granddaughters.
Ted was a fifty-year member of the Knights of Pythias, the B & A Primitive Weapons Club and the Teamsters Union. In addition to his gardening pursuits, some of Ted(TM)s other hobbies were caning chairs and “counting his grandchildren,” whom he loved, and loved to tease.
Survivors include three sons, Forrest Eugene (Shirley) Holdsworth of Bolivar, Ward T. (Linda) Holdsworth, Jr. and Jerry Allen (Sally) Holdsworth, both of New Philadelphia; eight grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Violet Gephart of Coshocton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Geraldine, on Sept. 13th of this year; a grandson; a great-grandson; a sister and two brothers.
