Willard M. Jones

Willard M. Jones, 92, of Dover, and a former resident of Strasburg, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, in Union Hospital.

Born, Dec. 20, 1915, in Uhrichsville, he was a son of the late David and Myla Davy Jones. Willard graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1934, and took coursework in mechanical drafting. He was employed by the E.W. Bliss Co., Canton, during the Second World War, and later by the Timken Roller Bearing Co. He retired from Timken in 1980 as a tool inspector.

Willard had a lifelong love of music and played the tuba with both the Dover Concert Band and the Canton Municipal Band for many years. He also played the string bass with Blaine Shively's band, The Rhythm Club. Willard was fond of bowling and bowled in single and mixed leagues well into his eighties.

He was an active member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church, and he also held membership in the local musicians' union.

Survivors include two sons, David F. (Janice) Jones of Powell, and Carl A. (Debbie) Jones of New Philadelphia; six grandchildren, Andrew and Amy Jones, Kristen, Kelly, Gavin and Sean Jones; four great grandchildren; a niece, Miriam (Gene) Andreatta of New Philadelphia; and a nephew, Byron B. Jones, Jr.

In addition to his parents, Willard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of forty-four years, Edith E. Finnical Jones, in 1982; a brother, Byron B. Jones, Sr.; and a sister-in-law, Edna Jones.

Family and friends are invited to call Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2 5 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m., in the funeral home, with Rev. Lynda K. Masters officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Uhrichsville.
