William A. ''Bill'' Smith

William A. ''Bill'' Smith, 90, of Dover, went home to be with his heavenly father and to join his loved ones that preceded him in death on Wednesday, November 22, 2000.

Born October 7, 1910 in Dover, he was the son of the late Harry and Nellie Wendling Smith. He was a 1931 graduate of Dover High School where he played basketball in 1929, 1930 and 1931 and won all-state honors. In 1927, he was one of three boys who were the first in Dover to receive the honor of Eagle Scout.

In 1933, he left home for San Fernando, California where he worked for the Civilian Conservation Core to help support his family. After returning to Dover from California, he became a member of the Police and Fireman Relief and Welfare Organization in 1936. Bill shared many stories of his days as a volunteer fireman.

He worked as a machinist at the former Shenango Penn Mold Company until he retired in 1975. Bill spent his retirement years devoted to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, working in his garden and going on fishing trips with his friends and brothers.

He was a life member of the Eagles Club in Dover and an honorary member of the Army-Navy and VFW Clubs of Dover.

On July 3, 1938, he married Beatrice L. Vance, who precedes him in death.

He is survived by a daughter and a son, Jennifer (Michael) Heathcock and Stephen (Roxie) Smith both of New Phialdelphia; three granddaughters, Stacy (Michael) Rees of Dover, Lori (Jason) Hohmann of Salem, Virginia and Stephanie (Matt) Segur of Lakewood, Colorado; a grandson, Christopher Graves of Sherrodsville; three great-grandsons, Matthew and Aaron Rees and Hunter Hohmann; one brother, James Smith of North Canton, and one sister, Frances (Mickey) Dick of North Fort Myers, FL.

In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Smith and two sisters, Helen Smith and Dorothy Cozart.
