William A. "Red" Charnock, 77, of Strasburg, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in Union Hospital following a brief illness.
Born August 13, 1930, in New Philadelphia, he was a son of the late William and Thelma Bonifant Charnock. Red attended school in Wainwright and was employed by the Republic Steel Corp. in Massillon. An automobile accident in 1958 (he was struck by a drunk driver) left him unable to work.
Red was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church, enjoyed gardening and flowers, working in his yard, and generally being outdoors, which also included walking and an occasional camping trip.
Survivors include two daughters, Denice (Mark) Griffith of Uhrichsville, and Jane Watkins of Strasburg; six grandchildren, Melissa (Shane) Griffith-McCalla, Brenton and Tony Griffith, Vanessa (Steve) McConnell, Jayna Watkins and Eric (Danielle) Watkins; nine great-grandchildren, Zachary, Justina, Shane, Matt, Ashley, Edward, Dawn and Chad McCalla, and Tressel Miller; his dear friend, Flora Long of New Philadelphia; three sisters, Norma Cerana of Uhrichsville, Marjorie Lee and Debra (Mike) Thomas, both of Strasburg; two brothers, Robert (Beverly) Charnock of Uhrichsville, and Charles "Ed" (Nancy) Charnock of New Philadelphia; sister-in-law, Joan Winkelman of Pickerington; many nieces and nephews; and his cat, Patches.
In addition to his parents, Red was preceded in death by beloved his wife of nearly fifty years, Delores I. Stoll Charnock, on January 31, 2001; two infant daughters and two infant sons; two sisters, Dorothy McCoy and Patricia Lahmers; and by a brother, James Charnock.
Friends may call on Sunday, May 18, 2-3 p.m., in the Strasburg United Methodist Church, where a funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. officiated by Rev. Steven Court. Immediately following the service, there will be a luncheon in the church. Following cremation, Red will be buried with his wife, Delores, in Grandview Union Cemetery, Strasburg.
