William A. Miller

William A. "Bill" Miller, 89, of Dover died Monday, Aug. 6, 2012 in Union Hospital at Dover following a brief illness.

Bill was Registered Professional Engineer for ODOT until his retirement in 1985 following nearly 43 years of service. He had also previously worked in the coal industry for Hanna Coal Company where he was a surveyor.

Born August 2, 1923 in Wheeling, West Virginia, Bill was the son of the late Elmer and Eva (Stewart) Miller.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in New Philadelphia. He graduated from St. Clairsville High School in 1941 where he was an outstanding athlete in basketball and track. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II having served in Co.B., 1st Bat., 310th Regiment, 78th Infantry Division where he trained in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee and spent time in England, Belgium, France and Germany as a 60 mm Mortar Squad Leader. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge where he was injured and was the recipient of the Purple Star Award. He wad discharged from Fletcher General Hospital in Cambridge as Sergeant. He enrolled at the University of Maryland in 1945. He transferred to Indiana Tech in 1946 and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering. While at Tech, he lettered in tennis and served as Student Council President. He received advanced management training at Ohio State University. He was a member of the VFW and former member of OSPE, Tusc. Valley Chapter and Engineer Foundation of Ohio. Bill was an avid golfer and considered Auman Timbers his second home. In his earlier years, he and his wife Carolyn enjoyed traveling. He also enjoyed "Big Band Music" especially Glenn Miller and attended many performances over the years.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn (Cole) Miller with whom he was married for 54 years until her passing on Sept. 4, 2000; In addition, he was also preceded by his daughter, Judith Miller in 2010.

He will be sadly missed by his son and daughter in law James (Rebecca) Miller of New Philadelphia; three grandchildren Adam (Chelsea) Miller , Abby (Cory Troyer) and Alix (Patrick) O'Donnell all of New Philadelphia; four great grandchildren Ali, Kyle, Luke and Maci and another expected great grandchild Gage William who will arrive in October; a brother in law Kenneth (Barbara) Cole of Texas, a sister in law, Irene Cole of St. Clairsville; two nieces Kathy Chini and Christine Graham and a cousin, Roger (Marlene) Stewart of Bridgeport; and his feline companion, Otis.
At Bill's request, a private funeral service will be held in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Rev. Jacquelyn Pinkowski officiating. Military honors will follow. There are no calling hours. Cremation will follow and inurnment will be held in the Garden of Peace Mausoleum in Dover Burial Park.
