William David Saunders, 89, of Dover, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, in Columbus from natural causes.
Born Jan. 16, 1921, in Wooster, he was a son of the late John L. and Anna Saunders. David, as he was usually called, served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II, and, on Apr. 17, 1949, married the former Annie L. Carter. He was employed by the Republic Steel Corp. in Massillon, from which he retired.
He was a faithful, active member of the First Baptist Church in Dover where for many years he served the church community by delivering food, providing janitorial support, printing the Sunday bulletin and singing while his beloved Annie played the piano. David also achieved his ministerial credentials and he went on to further serve surrounding communities and the West Indies.
He is survived by two sons, Willy (Sally) Saunders of California City, CA, and Stephen Saunders of Columbus; two daughters, Anita (Steve) Horton of Wilkesboro, NC, and Wendy (Johnny) Smith of California City; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, his beloved wife, Annie, a grandson, David D. Saunders, and a sister and a brother preceded David in death.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park.
