William R. Duncan, 84, of New Philadelphia, Ohio died Wednesday evening, March 16, 2011 in Union Hospital following a brief battle with cancer.
Born July 16, 1926 in New Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Edward A. and Marie (Fisher) Duncan.
Bill was a retired employee of the Union Camp Corporation where he worked for 46 years.
After graduating from New Philadelphia High School in 1944, Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was stationed in the Philippines and Korea.
He was a member of Holmes United Methodist Church and the Union Camp Retirees. He enjoyed volunteering and calling bingo at Atwood Lake and Twin City Nursing Home, was involved in CAP, and assisted with the Atwood Fall Festival for several years. He also was an Atwood Lake Park volunteer. He previously was a driver for the Amish community. He loved traveling and camping and was an avid Massillon Tiger and Canton McKinley Bulldog football fan.
Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Anna L. (Berndt) Duncan with whom he married on Aug. 29; one son, William E. (Harriett) Duncan of New Cumberland, Ohio; four grandchildren, Nannette (Geoff) Duncan Rhoden and Sarah Duncan both of California, Michelle Duncan of Florida and Becky (Jeff) Sharp of New Philadelphia; two great grandchildren, Kelsey and Lucas Sharp of New Philadelphia and a brother, Thomas Bradley (Peggy) Duncan of Uhrichsville and four nephews and a niece. He is also survived by his "canine best friends," Zeppy and Mutley.
He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy A. Duncan, two infant daughters, Cynthia Rae and Mary Ann Duncan and a sister, Helen Duncan Page.
Bill's life will be celebrated Monday, March 21, 2011 at 11am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Pastor Roger Warnes officiating. He will be laid to rest at Dover Burial Park where the Dover VFW will conduct military honors. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 10-11am.
