William R. Shroyer

William R. "Bill" Shroyer, age 95, a long-time resident of Dover, died Sunday, May 19, 2013, in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia. Bill had battled cancer since February.

Born October 26, 1917 at Coshocton, he was a son of the late Ray and Celia Marie Eckleberry Shroyer. Bill moved with his family at a young age to Dover where he attended school, sometimes taking time off to work in order to help support his family, and ultimately graduating from Dover High School in 1939. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Second World War in Europe, receiving three Bronze Stars. Upon his discharge, Bill completed barber school in Akron, and returned to Dover where he operated his own shop for over thirty years.

He was a member of St. Joseph Church at Dover; Dover Knights of Columbus Council 1973; Life Member of Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the V.F.W.; and member of Dover Lodge 707 Loyal Order of Moose. First and foremost, Bill loved to golf, which he did every chance he could, often at Willandale Golf Club in Sugarcreek. Every Saturday, he could be found enjoying a Woody Burger at the V.F.W. In younger days, Bill liked going fishing off the Florida coast, fresh-water fishing in Canada, and dancing in the local clubs at Dover-New Philadelphia.

Survivors include his son, Jim (Brenda) Shroyer of Dover; his step-sons, Terry (Linda ) Correll and John (Joyce) Correll both of Dover; his step-daughter, Tim (Karen) Weaver of Stone Creek; his grandchildren, Andrew (Christina) Malachin, Stacey Shroyer, Nathan , Dustin and Stephanie Correll, Samantha Weaver, Michael Lineberry and Christopher Correll; his great-grandchildren, Jade, Jr., Maggie, Emilee Malachin, Rylee Newton, Kelsee Graves, Nathan, Amber Correll, Kirstie, Taylor Correll, Mason, Kaden Weaver, Grace, Emma, Mya Lineberry and Holly Correll; his sisters-in-law, Carolyn and Joanne VanAlstyne and Rita Doutt; and his many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary F. "Fritz" Ziegler Shroyer on February 15, 1987 they were married just shy of forty-six years; his second wife, Grace Maugeri Correll Shroyer on January 19, 2007 to whom he was married for thirteen years; his granddaughter, Nicole Marie Shroyer; his sisters, Eleanor VanAlstyne, Betty Heintz, Jean Cosgrove and June Fanti; his brothers, Larry and Walter VanAlstyne; and by his step-father, Merle VanAlstyne, who played a major role in Bill's upbringing.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, of Wednesday, May 22, 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. A Christian wake service will be conducted Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. in the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, May 23, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Dover. Burial, with military rites, will be in St. Joseph Calvary Cemetery. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard at Dover.
